Big news has been announced regarding our annual High School mission trip for this summer, and on this website, you'll find all of the info about it.

This summer, rather than doing a VBS in Detroit (as we have done in previous years), we will be taking High School students to Memphis, TN for our summer mission trip.

On this site, you can find everything you need including: details about the trip, permission slips, and an explanation of why we are making a change, but here are the highlights:
· Dates are the same, July 11-18
· Cost is still low, $200 for the whole week (includes everything)
· The type of trip hasn’t changed – invite friends along & serve together
· Open to students entering 9th grade through graduating seniors
· We need some brave parents to come along with us

The student ministry team is excited about the new adventure with this year’s trip. Last year we took over 50 people and saw some incredible things happen in the lives of our students as well as the community we served. This year, we would love to bring an even bigger crew and we are looking forward to an even bigger impact.

We Need Parents

Because we are headed all the way down to Memphis this year, we would love to take a few more parents along with us. This is a great experience to share with your son or daughter. Not to mention, one of the few opportunities you will ever have to sleep on a gym floor with 50 other people who snore. If you are interested or have questions about it, please contact Caz (caz@mpcc.org) in the office at 989-773-3641 x214. You can also fill out the form below and drop it off at the office any time.

Why a Change This Year?

For many years now, Mt Pleasant Community Church has partnered with Military Ave. Church to provide a VBS for children in the inner city of Detroit. Over the past 3 years, this trip has become a large and momentum building event for our High School ministry (Crave). We have enjoyed the work we have done there and have been able to be a blessing to the church and community. However, our leadership team has been re-evaluating this mission trip in recent years – wondering if this is the best fit for our church and for our students. Around one month ago, the Pastor of Military Ave. contacted us to say they would like to re-focus the trips that they host. They are looking for a smaller group and were also wondering if it was still a good fit for our ministry. It seemed there was agreement between both Military Ave. and MPCC that it is time for a change.

After a great deal of discussion with the student ministry team, the pastoral team, and the elders, we have decided to develop a new mission trip for our High School students. While we will all miss the Military Ave. community, we feel this is the right decision for both our church and the Detroit ministry. We have always enjoyed, and continue to enjoy a great relationship with Military Ave. Church. Even though we will not be with them for their VBS this summer, we continue to pray for them and encourage them in their vital ministry. At the same time, we are excited about the new opportunities that God is opening for our new student mission trip to Memphis, TN.

Why Memphis?

In order for a mission trip to work for our ministry, the cost needs to be low, it needs to accommodate a large number of people, and it has to provide a significant opportunity for High School students to serve. As you might imagine, it takes quite a bit of searching to find the right fit for our group. Luckily we were able to find what we were looking for in Memphis.

Through connections with a couple of large churches in our denomination that have ministries in the inner-city, as well as personal relationships that our staff have with some Memphis pastors, we found some great opportunities. Craig Torgerson (our College ministry intern) recently led small mission trip to the area with some of our CMU students. On that trip, they were able to scout out the organizations we will be partnering with. As a result, we found excellent lodging and several different ministries eager to partner with our students. These ministries are doing significant mission work in neighborhoods with great need and we are excited to be able to participate in their endeavors.

All of the essential pieces of a great mission trip seemed to come together in Memphis and we will not have to change the date that we have scheduled for our trip July 11-18. As an additional bonus, even though Memphis is a city in great need, it is also a great “cultural experience” for our students (after all, what could be better than Graceland and BBQ ribs?). Even though this is a big change for us, our student ministry team is quite excited about this new door that God has opened.
